Becki Withani, aka Ms. Norris is conducting a most fascinating experiment - using a diet to try and find relieve from her migraines. This was her reasoning:
"A few weeks ago, in the middle of one of my tougher migraine periods (translation: 3 or more in a week), I said to D,
"Hey, I'm thinking of radically changing my diet. Any time I've read about anti-headache diets, they focus a lot on staying away from certain meats and cheeses, and on eating more fresh food and fewer additives. I wonder if it would work for me."
To her surprise, D, her husband, has agreed. After several days of contemplation, granted.
Thus the new migraine diet experiment was born. She choose macrobiotic diet (with some modifications) as something that would be a good balance between a radical change in eating habits and what is doable.
Here's a quick background on what Macrobiotics is:
Macrobiotic diet is a dietary regimen that involves eating grains as a staple food supplemented with other foodstuffs such as vegetables and beans, and avoiding the use of highly processed or refined foods. Macrobiotics also address the manner of eating, by recommending against overeating, and requiring that food be chewed thoroughly before swallowing.

There are lots of guidelines and philosophies intertwined in Macrobiotics. One of the greater influences on it (interestingly enough, by accident, since it became very popular in Japan at some point) is Japanese traditional cuisine. My gentle readers might want to glance through the above referenced link for more info, it's actually interesting.
And so, on January 1st 2009 the great Vegan(ish) Experiment has began. My gentle readers, the ever-inquisitive minds, might choose to follow it's progression. Yours truly most certainly will.

Thanks for the plug! :) I've been getting more like 5-6 a week the past few weeks, so it's really time for a change. I'm desperate. And even if it doesn't help the migraine, I'm sure I'll feel healthier overall.
Wow, macrobiotic!
Good show and good luck.
We all be following you on you journey. Hope it would help with the migraines. And if not - there's always keto :P . This one works for sure.
Here's good luck to you! Are the items on the diet regular foods or are they organic?
I will be interested to see the results..I know some people are really sensitive to chemicals in foods.
Mary Kay - the foods are not all organic; many are. I don't buy all organic because of the extreme mark-ups. I've done quick calculations, and we can't afford to do it 100%. I'd like to, but $$$ is always an issue! We do when we can, though.
Anyway, my strong intuition is that making a switch away from almost all processed foods to a grains/beans/veggies diet is a far bigger change than switching from non-organic to organic. We'll see.
** I wrote "making a switch away from almost all processed foods," and realized that's ambiguous. Our diet before 1/1/09 was not "almost all processed," and was far more healthy than that of most Americans. However, I now have cut almost all processed foods out. Hope that makes sense!
I was at beckiwithani's cool blog earlier today. Mmmmm the food looks SO good. Nope, I'm not a vegan, but I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye on her posts for some yummy ideas!
