Shopping for Generic Imitrex

On November 24, 2008, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories announced that it has launched the authorized generic version of GlaxoSmithKline's Imitrex(R) (sumatriptan succinate) tablets 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg in the United States.

On November 6, 2008, Par Pharmaceutical Companies, Inc. announced that it will begin shipping generic versions of Imitrex® Injection (sumatriptan succinate injection) 4mg and 6mg starter kits and 4mg and 6mg prefilled syringe cartridges.

Generically produced sumatriptan succinate is possibly the most anticipated drug of 2008. Many a migraine patient have been waiting for a chance of paying at least somewhat reasonable price for this popular migraine abortive.

All good and dandy, the GImitrex has arrived almost on schedule, at least on paper. Yet it's not exactly available.

Yours truly has jumped on the bike and visited the closest pill dispensary, otherwise known as Safeway Pharmacy. The helpful stuff knew not of the Generic Imitrex, leave alone had any clue as to a time of it's availability.

As a result, yours truly ended up paying for the pack of the real deal. Good thing the co-pay still holds.

While it is possible to find GImitrex online, it's local availability so far is zilch.

It would be interesting to try it to see if the generic works just as well as the original. But this will have to wait until yours truly has worked through the spanking fresh 9-pack of GlaxoSmithKline's largest cash crop. Do stay tuned, my gentle readers.

So many questions to answer. Is it just as good? Are the pills round or triangular? Do they come in a Hello Kitty packaging by any chance?

If any of my gentle readers get your hands on the stuff before yours truly does, please do share your impressions.

Rain,

I want to call the FDA about this. I saw the article too, but according to the FDA web site, there are NO final approvals of generic Imitrex; only tentative approvals.

It's really confusing

It's a pretty sensitive matter - that whole lawsuit when GC wanted to extend the patent and so on. Generic Imitrex has been available pretty much everywhere but in the US for a while now.

Even now, only one company can produce generic Imitrex pills for the US market. It should get the complete "generic" status sometimes next year.

At least I think that what I've read...

Teri, if you come across some fresh info on this, please let me know.

Cheers,

Rain

This situation is not confusing at all. The Dr. Reddy's product is the Authorized Generic - it is the actual GSK product for less cost.

Imitrex is a best product for migrine headache attacks. Therefore, it is really a good matter that this product is much available in most contries.
