Topamax Increases Uric Acid Levels, Risk of Cardiovascular Problems, Kidney Stones and Gallstones

Average uric acid levels are significantly higher in the migraine patients who take Topamax (topiramate) than in healthy controls, study finds.

As previously reported, use of Topamax leads to:

  • Raise of the levels of acid in blood
  • Shift of the calcium-magnesium balance toward calcium
As a result, migraine patients taking Topamax as a preventive have the risk of:
  • Developing kidney stones
  • Developing gallstones
  • Decrease in body weight
And now, new research by Dr. Abdulkadir Kocer from Duzce University, Duzce, Turkey and colleagues, has investigated uric acid and lipid levels in such patients.

Uric acid levels were found abnormally high in the migraine patients on Topamax. Serum triglyceride and total cholesterol levels were also higher in the migraine group but not significantly.

Latest research links high uric acid levels in the body to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. So, in addition to kidney stones and gallstones, people on Topamax run into higher risk of developing various heart and various cardiovascular problems. Not a jolly thought.

Yah, I wish it were possible to convince someone who's taking topamax to take a bit of magnesium daily. As a "topamax preventive"...

Topamax Side Effects said...

My name is Marcy Barnes and i would like to show you my personal experience with Topamax.

I am 46 years old. Have been on Topamax for 30 days now. When I got to 25 mg once a day all side effects ended and I have not had a migraine. I am back to my old self. No weight loss unfortunately.

I have experienced some of these side effects -
continuous migraine for almost 2 mos. With 75mg extreme dizziness, crying, sleeing all the time, slurred speach, burning sensation in mouth, skin felt creepy. I was told to wean off myself off.

I hope this information will be useful to others,
Marcy Barnes

Hi there

I've been on Topamax since January 2008. Of the milder side effects I got tingling in the feet which can be righted by drinking water, hair loss which can be helped by supplements usually and fizzy coldrinks tasting really terrible

On a more serious note - I had to have kidney stones removed in September 2008 and am scheduled to have my gallbladder removed in 5 days time due to gallstone. I think maybe its time to change medications....?
