Migraine Destroys Your Brain, part II

Migraines act like mini-strokes which cause brain damage. It has been recently speculated that person's mental abilities are impaired during a migraine attack due to the lack of oxygen to the brain and not only because of the pain, as was thought previously.

That was a study published earlier this year.

Building on this research, Dr. Nicole Schmitz and colleagues from Leiden University Medical Center sought to identify predilection sites of possible brain damage.

The frontal lobe, limbic system, parietal lobes, basal ganglia (globus pallidus and putamen), brainstem, and cerebellum appeared abnormal in migraine patients.

The study also identified the following tendencies:

  • Patients with more than three migraine attacks per month showed significantly more abnormalities than the rest of migraine patients.
  • People with with more than 15 years of migraine attacks showed significantly worse changes than did those with less than 15 years of migraine attacks.
Researches conclude that farther study is required to identify causes and consequences of brain damage as it occurs in migraine patients.
