Using oxygen as a migraine treatment is an old idea. It's been tried periodically and time and again it was left alone as hard to implement.
This is why - in order for oxygen to abort migraine attack, the patient needs to be placed in a high-pressure oxygen chamber. The sooner it's done, the better the chances for it to work. At the first symptoms, preferably.
None of us have such technology available at home; precious few have access to it even in hospitals and treatment centers.
Taking in oxygen at normal pressure would not abort migraine headache for most of us. At best, it might get us pleasantly high.
Cluster headaches are a different matter. Breathing in pure oxygen even at normal pressure does have a good chance of aborting an attack.
On another, somewhat related note:
"Oxygen therapy might ease pain of migraine, cluster headaches" is a press release by Center for the Advancement of Health
It seems to have spawned several articles on how oxygen helps with migraines.
Yours truly would like to note that he title is misleading and plays on the hopes of migraine people. Not nice, Center for the Advancement of Health, whoever you are.
My gentle readers might be better served by reading the original meta-study by Normobaric and hyperbaric oxygen therapy for migraine and cluster headache done by The Cochrane Library. Do note that it is only a review of studies, not a study in itself.
Another such review was compiled by the U.K.'s National Library For Health.

I have had personal experience with HBOT and migraine including nausea and it relieved both as well as other symptoms. It may not be readily available to everyone now, but neither was open heart surgery in the 70's, and now its done in nearly every hospital in the country. More clinics are opening across the country, as its efficacy is proven by the outcomes of people who are no longer in pain and appreciating a better quality of life. Since it has been proven that it works, it should not be discounted, this country works on supply and demand, so if more people learn the truth about it, and consider it as a non-invasive option with little to no side effects, it will eventually become more available and cost effective for a variety of ailments including cerebral palsy, autism, traumatic brain injury, parkinson's, lyme and MS, etc. It is FDA approved for a variety of conditions already, and has been used for decades by our military and in countries where there is socialized medicine. Just because you can't take it in a "magic" pill, doesn't deny its efficacy. You should revise the title of your posted blog as it is erroneous!
OK, sure. What should I change it to? Should I change it to "Oxygen Therapy for Migraine Headaches is not practical and is not available so don't keep your hopes up"? Or m/b "Oxygen Therapy for Migraine Headaches Press Release is making migraine people believe that inhaling oxygen will relieve their migraines"? Because that's pretty much the gist of it.
I do agree with you, if we wait another 40 years we might have hyperbaric chambers available everywhere. Hopefully then the supply would be ready to meet the demand.
Rain - "Oxygen Therapy for Migraine Headaches Press Release is making migraine people believe that inhaling oxygen will relieve their migraines" - you mean I shouldn't go out and buy one of those new pillows with the super-duper engineered fabric that's supposed to increase how much oxygen we breathe while we sleep? Deep breaths not going to cut it?
Actually, that pillow sounds awesome. Could you link me up? Not too sure it will abort migraine headaches though.
Second try... sigh. Here's the link to that pillow, RainGem. (And if this posts twice, I apologize!)
Thanks a bunch :)
I read somewhere that the were doing some investigation into whether this would work and now reading this saying that it doesn't, I was actually hoping that it would as im a suffer from migraine's but I did see the link for the pillow thanks
