Treximet Street Prices

Treximet is finally appearing in the pharmacies all around the country. The price-tag is, as expected, matches that of Imitrex, GlaxoSmithKline's flagship migraine abortive. Unfortunately for them, sumatriptan (Imitrex) is going generic later this year. Thus the introduction of Treximet, a "new" medicine to take it's place.

The going price is around $200 for 9 pills:

Comes November 2008, the prices for generic sumatriptan are going to plummet - see Generic Imitrex Price Projection .

Wonder what will will happen to Treximet then. Especially considering that Treximet=Imitrex+Naproxen(Advil) - see Time Traveling Treximet Trip .

Well, here's the plan - we live till November and find out. Meanwhile, my gentle readers, beware of doctors Treximet prescribing...

Interesting isn't it? About the only benefit Treximet has over Imitrex is that it has a lower dose (85mg) vs 100mg so it might cut down on side effects.

But what about the people allergic to antiinflammatories? They can't take the new pill because it has Naprosyn in it..back to generics I guess..

They are doing a bit of viral marketing in England to keep OTC Imitrex afloat. In the US they seem to be banking on the fact that most patients and doctors are not too interested in reading. So, if the TV says Treximet is da bomb, about 80% of us will believe it.

I think this post (and the comments) are unfair. Sure, Treximet looks like a scam, especially with generic Imitrex hitting the market soon, but as a user of Treximet, I can tell you otherwise. Treximet works for me and it works BETTER. I've tried all the triptans in all their varieties (pills, fast melts, nasal sprays, injections) without much success. Imitrex injections were the only thing giving me (partial, side effect ridden) relief, and frankly, I hated them.

However, my doctor convinced me to at least try samples of Treximet. I had already tried Imitrex + OTC naproxen with little success. I was skeptical of Treximet, to say the least. With free samples though, it couldn't hurt to at least try it.

Boy was I surprised! It worked! I got full migraine relief with few side effects for the first time in years. Hallelujah.

I agree that GSK's release of Treximet is a bit of a scam. It does have a small upside in that it guarantees that we take Naproxen with sumatriptan, which has been shown to have superior results. However, I think it would be easier for physicians to simply tell their patients to take 2 over the counter Aleve (Naproxen 220mg) and get identical results. This will be equivilant for most. On the other hand, some will get a placebo effect from treximet, which is fine. I'll take a placebo effect anytime if it gets rid of a migraine. As a physician who both treats and has migraines, I will not be using Treximet in its branded form.

It is a bit of a trickery on their part, I do agree. I do understand that they want to keep their profits but I am sure there are better ways to do that.

It's funny - they have got to have FDA approval for their ads. But they don't need any approval for viral marketing, apparently - they have been pushing Treximet for month now. Wonder if virals count as advertisement in that FDA program.

I agree with anonymous with migraines. I, too have tried all the other so-called remedies to treat my 40 years of migraines and Treximet has totally relieved the last four with no return symptoms. I wonder how many of the commentors here actually have experiene with this medication or are just reacting to the verbal hype floating around. Call it what you want, if it make the sladge hammer stop hitting me in the head, then i want it!

It's a total scam, as far as I am concerned. Prior to the arrival of Treximet, I was using Imitrex 100 mg., which was working fine. My use of Treximet lead to the same results as Imitrex; no better, no worse.

I paid $56 for every 9 tablet box of Imitrex. I now pay $10 for a 9 tablet box of the generic (Dr. Reddy's Sumatriptan Succinate Tablets).

Big difference, huh?
