Doing Imitrex Lines

A pill of Imitrex, glass table, razor blade and rolled-up dollar bill... Snorting your triptans might be a reality sooner than we think, independent.co.uk reports.

The idea is pretty simple - a major disadvantage in taking a drug orally is that metabolism in the liver may allow only a portion of the drug into the blood circulation. On the other hand, nasal dosing provides a direct route into the circulation. "Its inner surfaces, all 150 or so square centimetres of them, are rich in tiny veins which offer a direct and rapid way for drugs to get into the circulation."

The research has been going on for a while now and it seems that the pharmas are finally catching up. Here are some of the illnesses that are prime candidates for the nasal delivery of drugs:

  • Acute pain
  • Seasickness
  • Cluster headaches
  • Post-operative pain
  • Dental pain
  • Osteoporosis
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Treating symptoms of autism
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Boosting libido in women
And let's not forget the migraines (as if we could :P). "Research on zolmitriptan nasal spray used for migraines shows that beneficial effects on symptoms were seen within 10 minutes, far faster than with oral medication."

It might take Big Pharma a while to get us from pill-popping to powder-snorting. However, if it lowers the dosage amount (read - less side effects) and reduces the strain on our livers, it might be worth a switch. Some of you, my gentle readers, are already on "sniffing spree". How is it working out for you? Better than pills? Please do share.
