Your Hair Hurts? Read This

Migraine bloggers apparently wield an enormous power of influence. Here's an example - several days ago themigrainegirl made a post asking about hair/scalp pain she experienced.

The scientific community is obviously paying a close attention to her blog. The leading science-type in the field of hair-hurting, Dr. Marcelo Bigal, from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, immediately conducted research on the subject and published it in American Academy of Neurology. Here's a brief summary of that study:

  • Skin sensitivity is generally heightened in those with migraine
  • Two thirds of migraine sufferers reported symptoms of the condition allodynia, which is intensified and painful skin sensitivity
  • Allodynia may signal that someone's migraines were becoming more frequent and severe
  • This condition is more common in women with migraine and people with migraine who were obese or had depression

Allodynia might be "a risk factor for migraine progression" - a signal that the migraines will become more frequent or more severe, the study concludes.

Themigrainegirl, I sincerely hope it's not "the risk factor" in your case. I hope it will just go away and won't really amount to anything serious.
