With recent Topamax, Depakote, Lyrica, etc suicide scare, more and more medical professionals look toward other migraine preventives to treat their patients.
One of them is Namenda (also known as Memantine, Axura, Akatinol, Ebixa, Abixa and Memox). It's an Alzheimer's disease medication, used to slow-down deterioration of cognition, mood, behaviour, and the ability to perform daily activities in Alzheimer's disease patients.
Here's how this drug could be of help to migraine sufferers. There is a phenomenon called cortical spreading depression. It has been observed in migraine patients. "Cortical spreading depression is a wave of electrical activity that crosses the surface of the brain very slowly, and then is followed by a depression of activity," said Dr. Andrew Charles in a recent TV interview.
This "cortical spreading depression" is a migraine trigger, according to the good doctor. Namenda inhibits this spreading depression and stops this particular trigger from developing.
Dr. Charles' study on the subject has shown that about 65 percent of migraine patients who took Namenda as a migraine preventive had a significant decrease in their migraine frequency, with about 50 percent reduction in headaches.
