When pundits talk about "Big Pharma" it always summons the imagery of shadowy organization that gets rich on the suffering of others. Money-grabbing fat-cats in black suits who get payed to keep us happy, mellow, ache-free and law-abiding.
Rich they might be but not exactly shadowy. With their own web-site www.phrma.org and regular press-releases the Big Pharma is right there for every one to see. It's just no one ever looked.
Speaking of press-releases, there was one today that is of interest to migraine patients everywhere as it mentions neurological medicines in development. Here's the list:
- 82 new medications for Alzheimer’s disease
- 26 for epilepsy
- 23 for stroke
- 30 for Parkinson’s disease
- 58 for brain tumors
- 46 for multiple sclerosis
- 35 for sleep disorders
- 171 for several types of pain
- and 29 up-coming drugs for migraine and other headaches
That is something to look forward to. New medications such as SCP-123 by St Charles Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of neuropathic pain do sound promising.
Another interesting bit is in the last 2 paragraphs of that post. It talks about helping "uninsured patients in need access information on more than 475 patient assistance programs, including nearly 200 programs offered by pharmaceutical companies." If you don't have the coverage or having trouble paying for your meds, go to their patient-help site www.pparx.org or call them at 1-888-4PPA-NOW and see if they actually put the money where their mouth is.
