Unexpected results has been reported on connection between migraines and heart problems in a study conducted by Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics at the USU in Bethesda. The researches were trying to determine "whether people with migraine were more likely to have classic risk factors for cardiovascular disease," Ann I. Scher, lead researcher, said in an interview. "There is no evidence that people with migraine are at greater risk of having a heart attack. So it’s curious that they seem to have these risk factors," she concluded.
Here's a brief recap of the findings:
- Migraine patients often demonstrate common risk factors (high blood pressure and high cholesterol, among others) for cardiovascular diseases.
- There is no evidence that people with migraine have heart attacks more frequently than people without migraines.
- People with migraines are more likely to smoke, but drank less alcohol than people without migraines.
- Those with migraines are more likely to have a parent who developed heart disease at an early age. Mother for everybody but father for men only.
Researchers are somewhat baffled by the data they accumulated. It is, however, good news for migraine sufferers - migraines don't cause heart attacks. One less thing for us to worry about.
